Alaa Abd el-Fattah

  • The APPG coordinated a joint letter to the Prime Minister, with over 100 signatories, calling for further urgent action to be taken to free Alaa abd El-Fattah.

  • The letter is available to read here. It was also covered by PR here.

Vladimir Kara-Murza

  • On 7th May, the APPG also held a hearing into the case of British citizen formerly arbitrarily detained in Russia, Vladimir Kara Murza. Witnesses included Vladimir Kara-Murza, his wife and campaigner Evgenia Kara-Murza, and Jonas Helyar of the Global Magnitsky Justice Campaign.

  • Witnesses highlighted the lack of comprehensive response from the UK Government to Vladimir's case, and the need for the UK to adopt stronger policies to combat hostage diplomacy, including through the appointment of a Special Envoy on Arbitrary Detention, and the use of targeted sanctions to provide accountability for the arbitrary detention of British nationals.
